Alfa Laval has been selected by Acelen Renewables to supply the pre-treatment section of a major €2.7 billion biorefinery project in Bahia, Brazil.

The facility will produce sustainable aviation fuel and other renewable fuels using feedstocks including soybean oil, tallow, used cooking oil and macaúba oil.

Under a €102 million contract, Alfa Laval will provide heat exchangers, separators and engineered components covering key stages of the pre-treatment process, including clarification, degumming, absorption and wastewater treatment.

The project combines agricultural production, renewable fuel manufacturing and industrial technology. It includes cultivation of macaúba on degraded land and partnerships with family farmers and small producers.

The biorefinery is expected to begin operations in 2029 with a projected capacity of approximately 1 billion litres of SAF per year.
